Balik Pulau Ride

Date: 27.Sept.2009
Route: Parkview --> Relau --> Sungai Ara --> Teluk Kumbar --> Bukit Genting --> Balik Pulau --> Jalan Tun Sardon --> Parkview
Distance: ~32km
Duration: ~2.5hrs (ride time: ~2hrs)
Riders: Woei Tong, Freddy

Meet up at Parkview 7am.
Started riding down Relau towards Sungai Ara and Woei Tong is already putting in the pace. I found myself training behind but decided not to give chase as I still have hills to climb. I'm riding about 25 km/h already and if I push faster I will be "punctured" very soon.

Woei Tong was waiting for me before the ascend of Bukit Genting and as I approached him, he remark "So fast sweating already".....Well, I was sweating profusely and I was surprised to see that he is not sweating......I guess that's the difference between a rider who rides everyday versus a weekend rider....hehehe....

We started the ascend and again he quickly pull away from me and I have to play catch up again....well, I never actually catch up until we reach Balik Pulau town where we decide to have breakfast. A bowl of Wantan noodles & a glass of herbal tea for me and Hokkien Mee and coffee for Woei Tong and we are off again.

We push out heading for the climb up Jalan Tun Sardon. This is my first time climbing Tun Sardon from Balik Pulau and ......its really is a struggle for me...
I have to stop twice to catch my breadth, rest my legs and a quick sip of water.....before I made it to the peak where Woei Tong has been waiting for me for 8mins.....
I was sure glad I made it to the peak as this means its all downhill from there.

After a quick sip of water, we decide to start the descend. Woei Tong chose to use the off road trail towards Cherry Blossom while I continue down Tun Sardon back to Parkview.
Reason why I did not follow Woei Tong is because I don't think I have any energy left to climb up from Relau back to Parkview. Although it was just a short climb, I'm already a spent force......really admire Woei Tong's stamina & strength.

Compared to all the riders in our group, I'm still far behind them. Need to put in more distance and climbs before I can catch up with them.

Commuting

Last two weeks, I've been using my MTB as a transportation mean during weekend for running errant, beside weekend MTB riding in the morning.

Things that can be done:
1) Breakfast, Lunch (some times I'm getting bigger portion of noodles FOC, probably some hawker think I should eat more...)
2) Light weight groceries such as breads, fruit, newspaper etc.
3) Banking
4) Attendding no need former dress code function such as Tzu Chi Vegetarian Food Fair held in Tapak Pesta ( you get a lot of attention too if you put on cycling pant )
5) Go round bicycle shops to get poisoned

Pros:
1) save some fuel money, probably RM10 in my case
2) maintained my weight, it have been a long time seeing I weighted below 82kg
3) maintained high body metabolism

Cons:
1) with our environment humility level and all those particles floating around, any outdoor physical work mean need to changing shirts and quick shower when get home. My record is 5x shower in one day.
2) the sun, commuting mean sometimes I pedal around 2pm. Ladies might not fond about this
3) some guys probably think I'm crazy....
4) food bill might go up, I chuck in more food than I used to....:) [ my wife can't complaint now....haha]

My commuting round trip distance ranging from 5km to 20km, so it is not too bad if someone can brace the afternoon heat...and I intended to use bicycle as much as possible to my transportation need, hopefully one day I can haul 20kg groceries up Bukit Jambul.

At last, introducing my MTB/work horse: Fat Louise ( stock 2009 Merida TFS5oo except upgrade whole gear system to Shimano SLX)

Bukit Gambir Ride

Date: 20th Sept
Route : BJI <-> YCY <-> Bukit Gambir
Distance : 20km
Duration : 2.5 hrs ( a lot of chic-chatting lah)
Riders: WoeiTong, Hyo Young, TK

This suppose a quick ride for me, planning having breakfast with families. Target ride time is 1.5 hrs extended to 2.5 hrs. No choice, today got "kek-poh-chi" syndrome on the trail.

Meet up Hyo Young at Ashley Green traffic light at 7:20 am, think this is good sign, time to meet suppose is 7:30am. Give HyoYoung some basic fork 101, since she didn't ride in "rocky" trail before and off we go. Sorryahh TK, I totally forget about you will joining us until you ring me up, end up you need to ride solo until check point.

This is second time ride with HyoYoung, I know although she is a slower rider, but she will catch up. My suspicion that she is a runner is confirmed, she in deed a marathon runner. I'm not too worry until saw the trail conditions deteriorate badly compared to 2 months ago. All the rocks is more protruded from the red soil surface, really need to look far ahead on which path need to take while climbing. While those water run through drain mark get deepen, making if climbing at 6km/hr impossible to pass through. I told myself I can't run too far ahead, at least she able to see which trail path I take.

The funny part is today I find Bukit Gambir trail is easy, although with those rocky surface, I can ride just fine, no need to stop for catching breaths, no wheelies, heart pumping rate is not racing. Even got spare time to look back or going back to check on HyoYoung. Damn, let me check this morning what medicine I take....this is day and night performance compared to 2 months ago.

Bukit Gambir trail made it to my favorite trail list, since this is only few trails that I don't need to stop or pushing bike to finish the trail. :)

Sept 22 updates: me and TK ride up this trail again after heavy down pour, official time for me starting from "dust bin" collection junction until temple is 33mins. That ~15 mins improvement over 2 months ago based on my record.

Woei Tong's First Pg. Hill Ride (84)

Date: 19th Sept
Route : BJI <-> Yeap Chor Yee <-> Green Lane <-> Botanical Garden <-> Pg Hill (84)
Meal : Breakfast at Anson Road Pasar
Distance : ~ 40km ( Pg Hill climbing part too slow to detected by my computer )
Duration : ~ 3 hrs

On the same day afternoon where I tried Pg Hill (84) where my ride happen in the morning, I noticed there is one cyclist "lay" on top of Bukit Jambul new road pavements with his eye close. His two other cyclist friends attending to him, and his face look like he suffering "out of breath" syndrome. I'm observed them while my car pass through slowly, this incident got me thinking, " hey, 5 months ago I also suffered cycle up this stretch of road. This guy must be first day trying out on bicycle".

My mood prior to see this guy is pretty bad, since I'm pushing almost 40% of the time to reach 84, I thought I should do better than this. But this cyclist help me realized that how far I've go through the initial stage of cycling, while still far behind on my personal target or compared to more experienced cyclists.

Since pick up cycling, I always pushing myself to pedal faster whether on flat or hill, probably I'm a firm believer of "no pain no gain" thingy, and for past 5 months, I can't said I'm enjoying cycling, may be I've satisfaction but definitely not enjoying myself, because there always a target in my head while I sit on the saddle.

It is time to appreciate what I've earned so far through cycling and "enjoy" my failures while attempting to become stronger cyclist.

So, I salute to the hiker that walk pass me with a heavy back pack, emotionally move by one of the old hiker asking me "son, are you okay, is this your first day trying cycle up Pg. Hill?" . I will start enjoying cycling, still gonna push myself, but with a smile on my face after every ride.

First attack on Pg Hill = Mission Failed. :)

Limar Helmet

I have been searching high and low to get a second helmet due to my weird/large head, MET/Scott/Fox/Six Six One/Iron Mag/Giro/Cratoni, none of the brands seem able to fit except Merida which I currently using.
I've looking for second helmet for
past 3 months, finally last night I able to get one from Limar.
Size = XL (59 - 62 cm)

Weight = 280 g ( can't prove the factory claimed, don't have a weighting machine with 10g resolution)

What I think = boleh lah, my dream helmet is MET Kaos Ultimate (which can't fit my head shape)

DIY Head Lights (by Woei Tong)

I noticed my Fenix flash light bike mount is too loose for liking, create annoying noise
during cycling. I find a crack on it upon inspection and I don't know when it happen.
Looks like this RM40 bike mount quality can't be trusted and it only served me ~3 months,
bloody !@#$%.

Since I know I can't get decent flash light mount in Penang, that Fenix mount is online purchased from KL. I'm thinking maybe I should DIY. There is another reason to it. I'm getting boring just need to spend time to hook up/down all those stuffs (cable lock, flash light and bike meter etc: damn time wasting) whenever I leave my bike on Factory motorcycle park.

Below picture is my masterpiece, take me very long to figured it out and adjustments...20mins of my life. :)

Having a good angle and throw as well, picture taken simulate cycling head angle:

Title : Cycling For Health Part 2

When I made up my mind to get a MTB, to prepare for the "real on road" test, I try pedaling hard by using stationary bike in the gym. With highest tension on the stationary bike, I can pedal ~20 mins before my legs can't take the "lactic acid" anymore. Then I go try out my neighbor MTB, I find out I can pedal quite comfortably with his MTB with just 5mins test, although my neighbor told me he using " light gears", at that time I don't really understand what he meant, but I didn't pay attention either, I'm a happy man at that moment because I find his bike is "light" to pedal. I told myself, "hey, this is EASY, I've no problem to do it". [ This conclusion turn out to be one of my biggest "naive" in my life or " katak di bawah tempurung" by Malay ]

I bought my MTB in first week of April 2009, below is my first ride experience (just to showed how badly I'm physically 5 months ago) :

My neighbor and me set out cycle to Pulau Tikus from Bukit Jambul (where we stayed) for breakfast on first Saturday after I get hold of my bike. It is 37 km round trip, pedal on tar road, with some hills to climb, remember, I stay at a place called "Bukit" Jambul. This trip doesn't bothered me because my neighbor say from his experience, it is easy ride only, and it should just take ~2hrs to complete the trip. We start ride at 7am, 100m out from my apartment, we already start climbing a ~300m up hill; I get into trouble straight away, I feel how come the bike is so heavy; feel like dragging 1 ton weitht, leg sourness already start kick in, breath heavily after ~100m climb. When I finished the ~300m up hill climb, my lung almost going exploit, I can't felt my legs and I suspect my face turn "white" due to lack of oxygen. Luckily a ~ 1km down hill follow suit, at least I have some time to catch my breath. When we climb second up hill ( Yeap Chor Yee Road ), I give up instantly for the up hill, I just couldn't do it and my neighbor is no where in sight. ( actually they do waiting for me 300m in front and they do waiting for me few times a long the trip ).

To cut story short, I push the bike whenever there is a slight incline for the rest of the trip, my legs got beat up, out of breath few times just cycle on flat road, only fast and shallow breaths because my breath diaphragm in pain. When I reach my door step ~12pm ( 2hrs trip become 5hrs trip!!! ), first sentence coming out from my wife when she saw me is "how come you look like shit". Yes, I just have the most sweating in my life; I just go through the longest heavy breathing of my life; I just walk the longest distance on tar road in my life; I didn't realize that 11am heat can made me felt dizzy, the list go on. I laid on my bed like a dead man for 15mins ( seriously, I not even moving single finger in that 15 mins, that just how tired I'm or get beat up ).

I also start cycling to work the subsequent Monday after my "hell" trip on Saturday, I figured if I can "survived" ~37km trip, a 10km distance to work place should not beat me up so badly, moreover, route to my working place is mostly flat road.

After 5 months into cycling, which I try my best at least cycled 100km per week, here the results:

Physically:
--> can do ~80 km round Penang trip in 5hrs (At one time, I thought a person can pedal 80km in one day is non-human)
--> from take 30 mins 10km working route reduced to 21mins
--> from take 30 mins climb up Bukit Jambul track down to 11 mins climbing
--> average speed on bicycle increased from ~20km/h to ~25km/hr, max speed from 24km/h to 35km/h (based on flat road)
--> can pedal up Balik Pulau either from Bayan Lepas or using Tun Sardon Road ( previously dare not go near these roads, at one time, I thought a person can pedal up Tun Sardan is non-human)
--> can run 3km non-stop vs 400m running
--> you can refer to our blog for our off-road activities ( I still suffers a lot in this area )
--> Cycling mileages clocking ~1500 km ( I off for 3 weeks after my bicycle accident in Jamboree).

Medical facts:
--> sex = male ( I hope you guys get my joke )
--> hypertension is in control now, reading = 130/80 ( still taking medicine )
--> still a smoker ( still get scolded by doctor, because when she ask me when I'm going to stop smoking, my answer is " I'm not ready yet", this answer really drive her go nuts and my cycling friends too, haha) (however, have been reduced from 20 sticks/day become ~12 sticks/day; I do planning to stop, wait until I'm ready first...lah)
--> no gout attack after April
--> body weight reduced from 91kg to 83kg, that 8kg in 5 months!!! (for meal portion wise, I still eat like no body business, just less oily food)
--> no more chronic headache, i think my headache happen only once for past 5 months
--> cholesterol level down to 6.1 (Aug 2009) vs previously 7.5 (Nov 2008) (clap hand please, my best record for past 15 years is cholesterol level stay flat after one year, where got go down...wan)
Update 2009, November 16; latest overall cholesterol level is 4.0 mmol/l !!!
Update 2010, 1st Jan; I weighted at 82kg now.
Update 2010, 16th July; I weighted at 76kg.
Warning!!! Below section is one middle age guy blowing his own horn, you can straight go to "what my thoughts" section if you short of time or don't want to vomit.

Priceless (pinjam from Mastercard advertisement):
--> some newbie look at me as some tough guy now....:)))
--> peoples mouth turn to O shape when I tell them I done 80km trip yesterday
--> i think I can live longer now....hehehe
--> save the cheerleader, save the world. (ooops, watch too much Heroes), it should be, save the world by reducing using fossil fuel
--> some stitches on my left face due to big crash in one of the up north Jamboree, look very 'the' man right now
--> What! Yeap Chor Yee road is a hill meh??

What my thoughts:
--> listen to doctor and take actions on our health, especially if we're the bread winner (some guys from trust fund told me I need RM 4 million to raise my child now...hai)
--> i realized now that those products/slimming centers saying can reduce our weight by charging exorbitant price is bull shit, frequent exercise is the key
--> we don't really need to reduce foods intake to reduce weight, high exercise intensity is the key
--> healthy weight reduction is through exercises, not taking slimming pills (I go to that route few times)
--> moutain biking allowed me to see another beautiful face of Penang (fresh air, scenic views from top of mountains), a face that we forever can't see if we using car
--> I felt really good to have connection with mother nature again
--> I even have better sleep quality every night
--> something to look forward to for every weekend where to cycling for sights seeing, instead of just eat...window shopping...sleep...eat again...tv time.
--> no longer feeling guilty when chucking in mouthful of foods
--> your body will thank you because you start exercise
--> it is not easy to stay in shape, woke up at 5/6 am on weekends for riding. BUT, is worth it when you're on top one of the mountain to look at scenic view below you cast in morning sun. AND you have just burn 1000 calories to reach where you stand.

Lastly, thanks to my neighbor ( Ang and Mei Ling) introduced (or con) me to this wonderful exersice and all the guidance given by other cyclist I met on the road. I'm sure will pedal hard while saving the cheerleader. :P

Cycling For Health Part II End

Title: Cycling for Health Part I

I decided to write this because based on what I going through and results I've obtained, I hope can give other peoples in same situation like me some pointers. End in mind is for those lazy pricks out there, it is time for exercises, there is no excuses. Like once a doctor said to me : "if you really want to exercise, you can wake up at 4am in the morning to get it done, don't tell me you don't have time"

I picked up cycling when I given the warning letters from doctors ( yes, you read it right, is plural ), that I need to do something for my health over the years.
First warning letter received around 7 years back, some facts about myself:
Sex : Male
Age : 37
Health indicators that went over the roof:
--> Hypertension Type I (taking medicine but never under control, BP always higher than 120/80 )
--> Cholesterol 7.5 ( HDL + LDL )
--> Is a smoker
--> Having gout attack twice this year, that need medicine injection ( before cycling )
--> Body weight is overweight by 27 kg, if I based on BMI value of 25 for my height and age.
--> Chronic headache, at least 3x per month, but can settle easily by popping 2 Panadols.

Over the years, I acted like most middle age man that is not exercising (but only have one real reason = lazy) :
--> giving tons of excuses: tired after long hours work, need to take care of kids, family days...blah...blah
--> don't do annual health check ( chinese said : no eye see )
--> avoid seeing doctor, a good doctor sure will lectured me although I just go there for flu or coughing
--> lying to doctors saying I do exercises, just no so frequent ( trust me, doctors know you're lying, I learned from hard facts from a doctor )

I start made exercises into weekly schedule this year Feb after a serious gout attack, first two months just go to gym 5x a week, each time ~45 mins. Doing mostly free weight lifting, didn't do a lot of cardiovascular exercise. Followed crash diets for my meal plan, something like, only take 1/2 bowl of serials with 200ml of milk for breakfast, taking only vegetables and rice during lunch; few biscuit and cup of coffee sum up my dinner. ( I didn't take exact food every day, the key point is I take much less calories than my body needed daily, you should get the idea. Crash Diet).

I only lossed ~ 1kg in two months period, because those just take one apple or few biscuits dinners often lead me to have 2 packs of instant noodles at 11pm because the starving made me can't sleep. I even woke up at 2am few times because of empty stomach. Beside that, I don't see I gaining any muscles as well, especially those easily built up area such as bicep. I said to myself, I can't continue like this, to get back in shape should be hard, but not torturing myself, I die from hunger in one year time instead of die at 50 year old due to heart attack.

This is when I do some online research how can made things easier, what I find out:
1) Crash diet is a big no-no if no professional guidance. And if a crash diet is recommended, that person should be Obese Category III kind of body weight

2) Not enough food equal not enough nutrients equal no muscle mass gain. Crash diet just won't cut it

3) Increase one body metabolism rate is a effective way to burn body fat, the process to get there is through exercises; aerobic, weight lifting, running, swimming etc. AND eat enough foods ( enough foods mean we still watch what kind of food put into our mouth, but, portion can be generous or eat until we feel full. Nasi kandar, nasi lemak, chay kuay teow that sort of oily stuffs still can't consume 5x per week )

4) Exercises intensity need to be high enough, those walking 3 km per week or just run 1 km per week, go to gym 1x per week that kind of granny exercise intensity won't help. When I say high is sort like 5 km run 3x per week, 1 hour gym time ( please don't treat gym like kopitiam ) 3x per week etc.

5) Find a exercise that you love to do, this is to able us to sustain our motivation over long period of time ( of course can't said I love to ski, brothers, please remember we live in Malaysia, exercise still need to based on where we live )

6) For those in bad shape, cardiovascular exercise is important ( a lot of people misunderstood this term, cardiovascular exercise is not a walk in the park or go out running 5km everyday. Cardiovascular Disease. ) Cardiovascular exercise mean we need let our heart pump at certain heart beat per minute through exercises we do, hence trained our body deliver blood more efficiently. Again varying exercise intensity is a key word here.

I realized now that what I've done for first two months is not effective method ( I won't use the word "wrong", I put a lot efforts but have minimal result ). At that time, I noticed my neighbors is cycling around our apartment. When I chatted with them, I shocked to find out that they pedaled ~40km round trip just to have breakfast in other part of Penang. They even cycle to work. (Pardon my ignorance, I like most malaysian for my generation, we abandoned bicycle as a transportation method the moment we get our L license for motorcycle). The part they cycle to ate breakfast stay in my head for long time, I keep asking myself am I able to pick up cycling as the exercise that I needed. I have some sweet memory with cycling during my teenage years.

Finally, I take the plunge to buy a bicycle (a Mountain Bike) for my exercise need and few others advantages throw in (I have to justified why I need to spend few thousands Ringgit for a bicycle):
1) cycling is consider low impact exercise beside swimming, it is suitable for "old man" like me, more over, my left knee have ACL operation few years back, and tendency to have lower spine disc slip, I try to avoid those sports that need reflexes movement such as badminton, basketball etc.

2) although June 2008 petrol price hike doesn't really affect me, but I do see some of my friends suffered due to this. So, a transportation doesn't need fuel sound like a good idea. For those greedy trust fund managers that speculating commodities prices, you can go to hell. I find a way to reduce my money go to your pocket starting now.

3) Everyone need to spend some time on transportation to/fro from work, cycling enable me to turn unproductive traffic jam time into productive time ( cycle time = exercise time ). I almost spend same amount of time with my family during weekday night time. This is great.

Cycling for Health Part I end.

Green Wheelers Pre "Ride With CM" ride -- Our Struggles.

Date: 6/9/09
Route: Refer this link: http://pbb.com.my/node/100, but our start/stop point is Park View Towers, total distance = 81km
Riders : WoeiTong, Ang, Mei Ling, Chng, Freddy, Hyo Young
Objective: To gauge whether MTB equipped with off road tires can finish 87km distance in 5 hours. ( Because Ride with CM jersey only give out to those can finish 81km in 5 hrs ).

Start riding time from Park View at 6am, but I only woke up at 5:45 am, can't hear the alarm, must be last night down pour made me too sleepy, but I do delight that my newly bought toy, Top Peak "Defender" mud guard can put to good use for this round island trip. Rushing to put up the gears, luckily I prepared the night earlier, if not, sure made them wait for me.

Start riding with empty stomach but Chng rear brake having problem, tyre still rolling although he have pull the brake handle to maximum. He decided to move on to see whether he can control his bike or not.

We ride down from Relau to Bukit Jambu Complex to meet up with Hyo Young. Chng rear brake still give him problem, he try to do further adjustments, but problem still persist. He decided to drop out since this ride involve few km of DH. Damn, first casualty of the day.

After we meet up Hyo Young, we start ride to Coastal Highway and I start asking Ang, what is the average speed we want to do on flat road, is it 25km/h?
Ang answered he do not intend to go fast, this sound surprise to me, but it didn't occurred to me that Ang is having problem with his knees. (more to this later).

When I hit Batu Maung traffic light waiting for red light turn green, I noticed Freddy and Hyo Young is at the far back, so I discuss with Mei Ling and Ang, probably is a good idea that I fall back to accompany Freddy and Hyo Young, since both of them not familiar with the route we're going. When I drop back to check Freddy and Hyo Young out, Both of their face look compose and Freddy actually is taking care Hyo Young because her bike don't have any lightning at all. This is dangerous, with the time at around 6:45am with cloudy sky, motor vehicles might just miss her.

I'm familiar with Teluk Kumbar up hill, because my favorite Gertak Sanggul route is around here, no problem for me to go full speed, and take a short break while waiting for Freddy and Hyo Young, but I wonder do I able to hold up when start climbing Balik Pulau? To my surprise, Balik Pulau up hill I able to pull through with 17km/hr to 20km/hr speed, I'm thinking that not a bad speed, it must be the cool temperature in the morning helping, because last time I cycle up I do it around ~12km/hr after came down from Gertak Sanggul trail.

While DH from Teluk Kumbar to Sg Pinang, we should see both Freddy and Hyo Young faces, both of their faces look happy. Freddy event shouting " Beh, this DH damn shiok ". I decided to take breakfast in Balik Pulau town, turn out is a wise decision, I able to con Hyo Young to have a Korean BBQ, just don't when it going to happen...haha. ( sorry to Ang and Mei Ling, I don't know they need to wait for nearly an hour in Teluk Bahang for us ).

Around 8:45am, we start climb from Balik Pulau to Teluk Pahang, I hit at the top first, noticed quite a lot of roadie using this route and no MTB except us!!!
However, I do solute Freddy and Hyo Young will power, I know they are struggling to over come the fatigue after the climbs, they still continue pedaling hoping to catch up with rest of us. I wish I have the same will power few months back.

I received a sms from Ang in front of Teluk Bahang Dam saying they waiting for us at one of the Teluk Bahang coffee shop. Man, they must be wait until black hair turn to white hair already. We joint up Ang and Mei Ling around 10 am, and start riding back to Park View through whole express way, my back pain is cropping up again after I ride around 3 km into Batu Ferringi. I decided to stop for water refilling, while waiting for Freddy and Hyo Young; Ang and Mei Ling stop for just ~500m front waiting for the rest of us show up. At this point we've cycled 66 km and time is 11am.

Since I know my back pain will cause me to stop almost every ~4km, I decided to pedal around 25km/h to 30km/h while leading the rest of the pack temporarily, so that I can have some time to straight up my back before they arrive. I don't want to leave too far behind, but I didn't aware that Freddy/Ang all start having problem to carry on the ride.

I getting word in Jelutong Expressway from Mei Ling that Ang having knee pain, he only able to pedal slowly, while Hyo Young and Freddy no where in sight, we decided to stop at Bukit Jambul Bus Station for the rest to show up. At this point we've cylced 82km and time is 11:45pm.

When time pass by, Mei Ling and me getting anxious, how come no one show up, I start making calls to Freddy ( I don't have Hyo Young hp # ) and Ang, Freddy have reached Super Tanker Hawker Center waiting his wife to pick him up and according to Freddy, he met Ang at Citibank where Ang is pedal slowly. That message crank up Mei Ling nerves, we decided to pedal back Park View straight a way, planning to use car to look for Ang, look like this guy having big problem right now. We reached Park View around 12:30, Ang call up ~1pm saying he have reach Park View, what a relieve, if this guy another 5 mins late, we have go out to search for him.

At the end of day, me and Mei Ling concluded ( but mostly me lah doing the conclusion ):
--> doing "Ride With CM" in 5 hrs is doable with MTB equipped with off-road tyre, but with minimum stops in between
--> need to well prepare psychically and mentally, water is important, I drank about 3 litre of water for today ride
--> need to prepare food by our own, if will be a tough ride for the last 20 km if we just take 1 meal for whole ride. Mei Ling and me is almost crawling up EQ and Bukit Jambul hill on the way back.
--> rest well before this kind of long distance ride
--> the route road surface condition is good, don't have big pole hole and big pile of water after raining

No pictures from this ride, I know if I bring my DSLR, the camera weight will kill me after 50km. And I didn't noticed other taking pictures also...all struggle to finish the ride...haha

Carpet Ride

Date: 29th.Aug.2009 (Sat)
Time: 7am
Venue: Carpet

Ride up to Carpet with Woei Tong and Chee Wei. We ride from Parkview down to Relau thru the
kampung and cut out to Sungai Ara.

We then started the ride up Carpet via the single trail. It was my first off road ride so I was a bit cautious. I followed them from behind. The first part up on was good and not so tough for me. I was beginning to feel comfortable with the trail. Then comes the tough one.....up the rubber estate. I was not expecting this kind of steep & winding trail...(can't blame me, this is my first off road ride). My fist ascend almost threw me off my bike. I was doing a wheelie....luckily I managed to jump off. Only then I realize that I need to control the front of the bike during a climb. After a couple of hundreds meter I was already exhausted...so the best thing to do is to push the bike. And I do admit I push it for quite a distance alternating from pedaling & pushing until I reach carpet.

It was really an experience for me. Along the trails there were fruit trees, rubber trees, vegetable farms and also swallow house build there for collecting bird nest. At the top the place was cooling and the view were fantastic. It was really worth the climb (part cycling, part hiking or I would call it pushing). After a brief moment and some photos we decide to descend as it started drizzling.

As we were descending, the rain begins to pour and we were soaking wet when we reach
downhill. We descend using the Cherry Blossom trail. To my surprise, it was really quick downhill although I was pressing on both brakes most of the time.

When we reach home, it was time to wash up the bike and say goodbye.

Although it was just a short trip, it was really an experience for me. I was really tired but it
was really rewarding. I'm really satisfied and I will definite be joining more off road ride in
the future. Meantime, I need more training.

Thanks to Woei Tong & Chee Wei for taking me up Carpet and giving me advise along the way up and down the trail.

Pictures below were taken by Woei Tong. Thanks Woei Tong for bringing the camera.

Freddy's Hardtail

Took delivery of my new 2010 MERIDA MATTS TFS500XC-D MY (Malaysia Edition) on Friday(28.Aug) about 8pm.
Ang, Chng, Woei Tong and Keong were there to "greet" my new bike. It was raining so we did
a few rounds around the condo just to feel it.

We then adjourned to "Ang's bicycle shop" to do some adjustment for the seat high for me.
